After his second Test century in the ongoing England tour, India Test captain Shubman Gill said the team wants to win the Test and the series.
Gill played well in the second Test against England in Birmingham on Wednesday, balancing patience and aggression. He finished Day 1 at the crease with 114* off 216 balls, 12 fours.
In a BCCI video, Gill said, We want to win this Test match and the series.
While India lost wickets, Gill continued to trouble England with his steady game. He remained composed, found ways to score.
Gill, India’s youngest Test captain, swept Root for a boundary and then hit the ball hard to complete his hundred in Birmingham. He is the fourth Indian captain to score hundreds in his first two Tests, after Virat, Vijay Hazare and Sunil Gavaskar.
He also joined Dilip Vengsarkar, Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Azharuddin in scoring hundreds in three consecutive Tests for India against England. He got his hundred with 96.5% control, dominating in Birmingham.
The 25-year-old Test captain stabilised India’s innings after England captain Ben Stokes decided to bat. With India at 95/2, Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal added 66 runs for the third wicket.
After KL Rahul and Karun Nair got out, Gill and Jaiswal played cautiously, with the Indian captain surviving a close leg-before-wicket call against Chris Woakes. Gill relieved the pressure with two boundaries in the 33rd over.
Gill showed glimpses of his good form in the first innings of the series opener. He played steadily, built his score and justified the team’s faith in him by scoring his first Test hundred outside Asia in 140 balls, 14 fours.

He is now the fourth Indian to get to triple digits in the first innings as Test captain, after Vijay Hazare (1951), Sunil Gavaskar (1976) and Virat Kohli (2014). He also reached the 2,000 Test run mark in his Test captaincy debut, just like Virat did in Adelaide 11 years ago in Australia.
