Smriti Mandhana, the Indian women’s team vice-captain, has moved to third in the ICC T20I batters’ rankings.
Mandhana already tops the ODI rankings and made the jump after her first T20I century in the series opener against England. Her 112 off 62 balls with 15 fours and three sixes helped India win by 97 runs in Nottingham, a record defeat for England.
I feel good because I need to keep pushing and improving in this format. It’s not my most natural format, Mandhana said after the win. I like to time the ball and I’m not a big hitter. For the last six years it’s been a work in progress and it still is. Getting a hundred in this format after getting them in Test and one-day cricket which suits my batting more is special because it’s not really my strength.
The left-handed opener now has 771 points, just behind West Indies captain Hayley Matthews (774 points) and Australia’s Beth Mooney (794 points).
Other Indian players also moved up in the rankings. Shafali Verma moved to 13th and Harleen Deol re-entered the rankings at 86th after her 43.
