Sri Lanka won the first ODI of the three-match series by 77 runs at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday. Bangladesh collapsed during the chase.
Sri Lanka scored 244 and then bowled out Bangladesh for 167 in 35.5 overs. The Bangla Tigers lost their momentum after a good start.
Bangladesh made a record by losing seven wickets for five runs. This is only second to Zimbabwe’s record against Sri Lanka in 2008 at Harare.
At one stage they were 100/1. Then they lost seven wickets before reaching 105, thanks to Wanindu Hasaranga and Kamindu Mendis.
Charith Asalanka’s 106 from 123 balls and Kusal Mendis’s 45 put Sri Lanka in a good position. Janith Liyanage, Milan Rathnayake and Hasaranga also helped the hosts reach 245.
Bangla opener Parvez Hossain Emon was caught out for 13 off 16 by Asitha Fernando in the fifth over. Tazid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto then put on 71 runs to steady the ship.
Shanto was run out for 23 which started the Bangladesh collapse.
Hasaranga dismissed Litton Das for a duck and then removed Tanzid for 62 in the same over. Mendis took Towhid Hridoy and Hasaranga then took Mehidy Hasan Miraz for a duck.
Mendis then removed Tanzim Shakib before Hasaranga completed his three-for by removing Taskin Ahmed for another duck. Bangladesh were 105/8 then.
