Everyone’s talking about the Bengal Pro T20 League right now but down at Eden Gardens something bigger is brewing. On November 14, India plays South Africa in a Test match which is a big deal since it’s been five years since red ball cricket was played in Kolkata. This will be the first Test at Eden since the India-Bangladesh pink ball match in 2019 and it’ll also be the first time in nearly 13 years that Virat Kohli won’t be there after his recent retirement.
With just a few months to go the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is gearing up, especially since Eden missed out on hosting the IPL final. Word is this Test is kind of a make up for that.
The biggest question on everyone’s mind is what kind of pitch will be ready for the Proteas. South Africa does well on pace friendly surfaces and the curator has hinted at a good pitch with some grass on it. “We’re getting two pitches ready but won’t be re-laying them,” said Sujan Mukherjee, the curator. He mentioned that they’ll add a layer of soil and sand to help out the grass.

Sujan is open to whatever Team India wants, whether that’s a fast pitch or one that helps the spinners. So it seems like there’s room to adjust based on what the team decides.
But it’s not just the pitch getting attention; the outfield is also in the works. Some coring will happen to keep it looking nice and green. With five months to go excitement is building at Eden Gardens. No matter if the pitch favors India’s spinners or South Africa’s quick bowlers, one thing’s for sure we’re in for some good cricket.
