As reported by several media houses, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has suspended the IPL 2025 season following increasing military tensions between India and Pakistan. The Punjab Kings vs. Delhi Capitals fixture in Dharamshala was called off after Pakistan launched missile and drone attacks on Jammu and adjoining areas. The safety and security of the players and staff have now become paramount, with the game slipping down a few notches.
Many international players appear worried about the situation and want to leave for home. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, it has been reported that there has been significant concern from Australian cricketers about being in India, especially those close to the border areas. RBI sources have reported that all overseas players want to get back home immediately. Big names like Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood are playing IPL 2025. Players in the canceled match included Starc, Ricky Ponting, Brad Haddin, and Marcus Stoinis.
As of now, all the teams are waiting for instructions on how to proceed with the players and the staff’s return homes as the Ministry of External Affairs would brief them on Friday evening. Said a source to IANS, “Yes, IPL franchises have now been informed of the IPL 2025 being indefinitely suspended with immediate effect by the BCCI.” Teams have been told to remain where they are for a few hours until further information is received.
Cricket Australia is keeping an eye on the situation and the safety of the players in both the IPL and Pakistan Super League, which too has been shifted to Dubai. They’ve also admitted to having been in touch with the Australian Government, the PCB, the BCCI, and local authorities for the latest updates.
As things stand, there is no clue as to whether the IPL would resume or not this year. It will be fascinating to see if the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council can come up with a way to complete the tournament at a later point in time.
