The clouds have rolled in over The Oval, and England’s prospects are looking dark in the sky and on the field. Chris Woakes, England’s most reliable player and the only bowler to play in all five Tests of the India series, has been ruled out of the final Test due to a shoulder injury sustained on Day 1.
Woakes’ injury happened in the 60th over on the first day, when the rain interrupted play. He dived near the boundary to stop a run and landed awkwardly. It was clear it was serious when he got up with his arm hanging.
He left the field in pain and hasn’t returned. A scan was done last night and this morning the news came through that Woakes won’t play for the rest of the fifth Test.
This is a big blow for England. Woakes has been consistent, swinging the ball and chipping in with the bat when needed. Now the others will have to do more, which isn’t ideal given the fatigue of the series.

Can England replace Woakes?
No, they can’t. According to MCC Law 24.1.2, England can only bring on a substitute fielder who can only field, not bat, bowl or captain.
Unless it’s a concussion (which it isn’t) they can’t bring on a replacement for Woakes.
Is India in control?
India took advantage of the situation and the weather and closed on 204 for 6 with Karun Nair 52 not out. Although rain and overcast skies made it tough for both batsmen and bowlers, India might get a first innings lead.
England will have to work hard. With Woakes out, the bowling responsibility will fall on Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Jamie Overton and Jacob Bethell. And The Oval wears down bowlers as the match goes on.
England are now without a bowler and a plan. Woakes’ absence is a big blow and the rest of the team will have to be at their best to contain India.
