Shubman Gill silenced his critics about his form and captaincy by scoring a massive 269 on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. His long innings was the foundation of India’s big first innings total of 587.
The cricket world was praising Gill’s play but former India cricketer Yograj Singh was a bit disappointed, saying it’s a crime to get out when you are doing well. Yograj is Yuvraj Singh’s father.
Yograj said it was a crime to get out when you are doing well. His son Yuvraj was also upset with Gill’s dismissal.
“I am glad what Yuvraj has done in his life, he is giving back to players by coaching them. Gill, Abhishek and Arshdeep have been his trainees. When Shubman Gill was batting on 200, I wanted him to stay 250 not out. When a batter gets out, I am pained. Yuvraj feels the same. He has realised that getting out after such a big score is a crime,” Yograj said.
Yograj explained why they were both upset even after Shubman Gill’s good innings.
“When you are 200 not out, 250 not out, 300 not out, when you have ‘not out’ next to your name, then all your mistakes are improved. Also people were saying a lot about Shubman Gill. To them I want to say, ‘If you haven’t played cricket, don’t talk about it.’ Gill has worked on his top hand,” Yograj said as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Yograj is proud of the progress of Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh who have been learning under Yuvraj for years. He said learning never stops, how legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar were hard on themselves after missed chances.
“People become great because even when they play big innings, they go back and think about it, looking at what they did wrong. Gill can do even better. He can score 300, 400… if Brian Lara can score 500 not out, then we can too,” Yograj added. Gill led the way and India is in a good position at Edgbaston. England batted at the end of Day 2, lost 3 wickets for 77, behind by 510.
