Shubman Gill recently captained India in the 5 Test series against England which ended in a draw. After that good start he might soon play a big role in the T20I team too.
RevSportz reports that Gill might be named India’s T20I vice-captain for the Asia Cup 2025. Suryakumar Yadav is expected to be fit for that event so Gill could be his second in command and rejoin the T20I team.
If Gill is added to the Asia Cup squad and plays in the XI it will be his first T20I since the series against Sri Lanka in July 2024, right after the T20 World Cup. Gill didn’t play in that World Cup. BCCI selectors along with new head coach Gautam Gambhir decided to name Gill as the new T20I vice-captain.
Earlier this year Gill, 25, focused on ODIs for the Champions Trophy and then Test cricket for the Australia tour. So he missed the T20I series that followed so selectors chose Axar as the new vice-captain for the home series against England earlier this year.
Many now think that Gill who is currently India’s ODI vice-captain will eventually become the full time ODI captain. Some even say he will lead India in the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
Dainik Jagran reports that the 3 match ODI series in Australia this October might be more than just another series. It could be the last time we see Kohli and Rohit play in the 50 over format. If that’s the case the series would be more like a farewell than just another competition.

One thing that could make this happen according to Dainik Jagran is a request from the selectors. If Kohli and Rohit want to play ODIs till 2027 they need to commit to play in India’s domestic calendar, specifically the Vijay Hazare Trophy later this year.
Axar Patel has been Suryakumar Yadav’s second in command since Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is after the T20 World Cup last year.
Meanwhile Suryakumar Yadav the T20I captain seems to be getting back in shape before the Asia Cup. He has been batting in the nets during his rehab at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE).Suryakumar has a good record as India’s full time T20I captain since Rohit Sharma retired from the format after the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup win.
Suryakumar has led India in 22 matches, won 17 of them. In 83 T20Is Suryakumar has scored 2598 runs at an average of 38.2 and a strike rate of 167.07. He last played for Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in the Mumbai T20 League in June, scored 122 runs in 4 innings.
