Before CPL 2025, the Guyana Amazon Warriors signed Australian wicket-keeper batter Ben McDermott. He’s replacing New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips who is injured.
Phillips who the Warriors picked up in the CPL 2025 draft in June was expected to bring some power hitting and spin to the team. But a groin injury he suffered during a game for Washington Freedom in MLC 2025 will keep him out for weeks. He won’t be able to play from August 14th.
To fill in for Phillips, the Warriors signed McDermott. The right-handed Australian can hit hard and is good behind the stumps. He’s played in different T20 leagues around the world, like Australia’s Big Bash League where he made a name for himself with the Hobart Hurricanes.

Phillips also had to sit out New Zealand’s T20I Tri-Series and the current two-game Test series in Zimbabwe. He went with the national team first but scans showed he needed weeks to heal. So he had to leave the tour and there are worries about when he’ll be able to play again.
Back in Guyana, McDermott is a good replacement for Phillips, bringing similar hitting power and more options for wicket-keeping. As CPL 2025 approaches, the team is counting on McDermott to make an impact quickly and help the team improve after finishing second last season.
