After the second day of the Test against India at Edgbaston, England spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel gave an update on the fitness of fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson. At the end of play on Thursday, England were 77/3 with Joe Root (18*) and Harry Brook (30*) not out, in response to India’s 587.
Jeetan Patel spoke about pacer Brydon Carse’s first innings performance. Carse took one wicket in 24 overs, went for 83 and bowled three maidens.
We had two tough Tests. We had a good rest between the first and second Test, which is great because we have many seamers, he said in the post-day press conference.
Archer and Atkinson are good to go and we can pick them for the next games.
We have guys coming back into the squad. Joff bowled very fast at lunch today and Gus might be fully fit again. Then we can start to rotate players, he added.
Earlier in the week Archer played his first red ball game in over four years for Sussex against Durham. He scored 31 and took 1/32 from 18 overs and the game was a draw.
Archer is coming back into the team for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup and has played many ODIs and T20Is but needs more Test experience.

India scored 587 in the game. England had a shaky start as Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj made early inroads. They got rid of Ben Duckett (0), Ollie Pope (0) and Zak Crawley (19) quickly. Joe Root and Harry Brook fought back and added 52 runs for the unbroken 3rd wicket to get England to 77/3 at the end of the day.
