Sky Sports recently came up with a very interesting development about Rohit’s retirement. It seems Rohit was willing to retire during the England series, but the BCCI wanted him to stay on for consistent selection. They even offered that he could just play and nothing else, but Rohit refused and retired later.
He announced his retirement on May 8 through Instagram. His retirement came in the wake of two disappointing Test series against New Zealand and Australia. Rohit had opted out of the last Test against Australia two weeks ago, and although he said at the time that he wasn’t retiring, the announcement caught many by surprise.

Sky Sports said Rohit wanted to retain captaincy at least for part of the England series, but the BCCI was eager to make a clean break on this so it could embark on the new WTC cycle. There were also rumors about some sort of forced retirement for Virat Kohli, but how much of it was true is anybody’s guess.
Right now, Shubman Gill is seen as a strong contender to lead the Test team, though a few BCCI officials are skeptical whether he is ready for the role. Rishabh Pant could also be seen taking up that mantle, having shown that he can deliver on Test. Jasprit Bumrah could well have been given leadership duties on the Australian tour, but his fitness as a fast bowler might be a bottle-neck for him.
