In their second face-off of the season, the Chennai Super Kings, who have won the IPL five times, stepped onto the field against the Mumbai Indians wearing black armbands. This game, held at Wankhede Stadium, turned out to be a tough one for CSK, as they fell short against MI, losing by a hefty nine wickets. This loss was a chance for Mumbai to bounce back after their earlier defeat to CSK this IPL season.
While CSK hasn’t made an official announcement about the reason for wearing black armbands, reports from Sportstar suggest it was in memory of the father of their player Devon Conway. Conway, who comes from New Zealand, joined CSK in 2022 and played a key role in their championship win that same year. In the 26 matches he has played for the team, he has brought in 1,018 runs at an impressive average of 46.27, along with a strike rate of 139.83. He has also hit 10 half-centuries, with his highest score being an unbeaten 92. However, he missed out on the previous season due to a thumb injury.
At 33 years old, Conway has played three matches this season and managed to score 94 runs at a strike rate of 127.02. Unfortunately, CSK has been struggling this season, racking up six losses out of their eight matches, and their chances of making it to the playoffs are looking pretty slim.
During the match on Sunday, CSK set a score of 176 runs for five wickets, thanks to solid performances from Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube. But MI made quick work of that target, finishing the game in just 15.4 overs, which helped boost their net run rate. Rohit Sharma found his form again, scoring an impressive unbeaten 76 off 45 balls with four fours and six sixes. Suryakumar Yadav also put on a show with a remarkable knock of 68 not out from only 30 deliveries.
Now, CSK has a little break of four days before they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at their home ground in Chepauk. They’re currently sitting at the bottom of the points table with just four points and a net run rate of -1.392. With the playoffs in sight but looking difficult, captain MS Dhoni is already looking ahead to next season. In a post-match chat with broadcasters, he mentioned, You don’t want too many players getting changed. What will be important is to try and qualify for playoffs, but if not, we need to secure a solid lineup for next year and come back stronger. It’s clear that while the current season is crucial, they’ve got their eyes set on the future as well.
