India is all set to start anew in Test cricket with Shubman Gill taking the reins after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired. This has left many fans and experts stunned, especially just before a big series in England. In a recent chat with InsideSport, former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh shared his thoughts on the retirement of these two legends. He said both Kohli and Sharma had five years of Test cricket left in them and should have continued playing.
Yograj also felt they didn’t pass on the leadership to Gill smoothly. He cited Sourav Ganguly’s approach where he balanced senior players with junior talent. Yograj is high on Shubman Gill, saying he’s lucky to have Yuvraj Singh as his mentor who has been backing him since his junior cricket days.
Yograj said, “Virat and Rohit could have played Test cricket for another five years. They should have stayed to help the young players transition. Ganguly had a mix of senior and junior players. In this case the baton hasn’t been handed over properly; it’s just been tossed to Gill. He’s a great player and having Yuvraj behind him is a huge advantage. He’ll always guide him.”
