Abdullah Shafique, who has been out of the limelight for a while, has signed with Yorkshire County Cricket Club in England. He will play two Championship matches at Trent Bridge and York and four Vitality T20 Blast games. His teammates will include Indian cricketer Ruturaj Gaikwad who has also joined the team.
After signing, Shafique said: “I’m really happy to get this chance with Yorkshire and can’t wait to team up before a big game against Nottinghamshire. Headingley has always been a place I wanted to play and I’m looking forward to experiencing a Roses match which I’ve heard is amazing! There’s so much history here and I hope I can make an impact in this part of the season.
He should strengthen Yorkshire’s batting line up as his solid technique will be useful in the six games he will play. Shafique had a good start to his international career scoring 52 and 73 on his Test debut against Bangladesh. He then made good runs against Australia and Sri Lanka and became an important player for Pakistan. In 22 Tests he has 1504 runs at around 38 with five centuries.

Though he has played ODIs and T20Is too, his white ball cricket hasn’t been as good. After some good performances 2024 was tough for him as he scored 174 runs in six Tests at an average of 15.82. This slump led to him being replaced at the opening spot by Shan Masood and Saim Ayub. Despite averaging 51 and 39 in 2022 and 2023, his 2024 was so bad that he was left out of the team.
