The cricket world is buzzing as the IPL 2025 Mega Auction approaches. With the official list of retained players revealed on October 31, 2024, teams are now fine-tuning their strategies ahead of this highly anticipated event. The auction, set for November 24-25, promises to be a pivotal moment as franchises aim to secure the best talent for the upcoming season.
As franchises prepare, the spotlight is on the critical decisions regarding player retention. Each team has the opportunity to retain up to 6 players, including the option to utilize a Right to Match RTM Card allowing them to buy back one of their released players. This process not only impacts team dynamics but also requires significant financial commitment, affecting each franchise’s overall budget.
With a confirmed salary purse of INR 120 crore per team, the IPL 2025 Mega Auction is set to bring significant changes to team rosters. Franchises are meticulously assessing their options, striving to strike the right balance between maintaining star power and optimizing their squads for the upcoming season. The countdown is on, and the excitement is palpable as fans and teams alike await the outcomes of this crucial auction.
What are the IPL Retention Slabs and How Do They Work?
Franchises can retain up to six players, with a maximum of 5 capped players (Indian or overseas) and up to two uncapped players.
The retention values for the five capped players are as follows:
- Player 1: INR 18 crores
- Player 2: INR 14 crores
- Player 3: INR 11 crores
- Player 4: INR 9 crores
- Player 5: INR 7 crores
For uncapped players, each retained player is valued at INR 4 crores.
Scenario 1: Team A retains 6 players (5 capped + 1 uncapped)
In this case, a total of INR 79 crores will be deducted from Team A’s purse, leaving them with INR 41 crores to spend at the auction table. Since they retained six players, they will not have any Right to Match (RTM) cards.

Scenario 2: Team B retains 5 players (4 capped + 1 uncapped)
Here, INR 65 crores will be deducted from Team B’s purse, leaving them with INR 55 crores for the auction. They will also have one RTM card available to potentially bring back another player when he comes up for bidding.
Note: The mentioned purse deductions are the minimum amounts. Teams can choose to pay more than the set value for a retained player, which would further reduce their auction budget. For example, if a team decides to pay Player 1, INR 20 crores instead of INR 18 crores, an additional INR 2 crores will be deducted from their auction purse.
As rumors swirl, here’s an early look at the possible retention lists for each team, highlighting key players they may choose to keep. Note that these are just predictions, and strategies could change closer to the auction.
